The-Michael-Kaeshammer-TrioMichael Kaeshammer has “piano technique to burn, and has an acrobatic way with a grand piano,” says John Terauds of the Toronto Star   “The hottest Canadian music export isn’t indie rockers, it’s jazz musicians. First there was Diana Krall, then Michael Bublé and Matt Dusk, and now Michael Kaeshammer has come along…The German-born pianist’s latest could easily be the next big jazz record” - NOW Magazine

After studying classical piano for seven years in his German homeland, a 13-year-old Kaeshammer discovered boogie-woogie and stride piano as played by Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson, Pinetop Smith, and Fats Waller. In three years, he was playing boogie-woogie piano in clubs, concerts, and festivals all over Germany. He attracted attention almost immediately after the family moved to the west coast of Canada, performing at blues and jazz festivals across the country during the summer of 1996.

Besides playing the piano he also sings blues and jazz. When performing, Michael Kaeshammer doesn’t simply wow you with his chops; he invites you in and talks to you. He’s a gifted singer and songwriter, a highly trained technician and interpreter and an incendiary piano player. But also, on stage and off, he’s a consummate host.

Kaeshammer’s fiery style incorporates elements of his early influences – the New Orleans sound of Fats Waller, Art Tatum and James Booker.  He also takes his cue from one of his own all-time favorite records, Robert Palmer’s Sneaking’ Sally through the Alley, recorded in New Orleans 1974 with the influential local funk outfit, The Meters.  Similarly, at his shows, the joy is in the sharing, the process of getting where you’re going, not just the end result. As Bernard Perusse of the Montreal Gazette said: “He’s a showman. And showmanship is what makes people talk… If you haven’t seen him live, you haven’t really experienced him in his true element.”

Best known in Canada, he has performed and toured extensively in the United States and Europe. His discography includes, Blue Keys (1996 BSB Productions); Tell You How I Feel (1998 Alma Records); No Strings Attached (2000 Alma Records); Strut (2003 Alma/Universal Music); Days Like These (2007 Alert/Universal Music); Lovelight (2009); Kaeshammer in 2011 (PID) and the DVD/CD Kaeshammer Live (2012 Alert Music/Universal Music Canada).
